RT Crafternoon: Nerdy Knits and Crochets

It’s true, nerds! Knitting and crocheting are not just for the older generation. Many in the nerd community have taken to this activity. What is the difference between the two, you may ask? Check out this YouTube video for some answers:

Essentially, knitting uses needles which hold “rows” of live stitches, whereas traditional crochet uses a single hook for the one live stitch. The resulting fabric is different in weight and overall appearance. Crochet fabric is thicker and stronger than knitted fabric, even using the same yarn and same size hook/needles.

There is also a specific art within this community devoted to Amigurimi. Amigurimi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Whether you are looking to join in on the knitting/crocheting craze, or you are simply looking to purchase pre-made items, I’ve got you covered in this Star Wars themed edition of Nerdy Knits & Crochets!

One thing a beginner can always rely on is a good book. Amazon is a cornucopia of both digital and hard copy books. One such example is Knits for Nerds by Joan of Dark AKA Toni Carr.

There are also many websites where you can download patterns. The website I found with the largest resource of free, downloadable patterns is Ravelry. Simply create an account and knit or crochet to your heart’s desire! Here are some examples of patterns you can find on Ravelry:

Felted Baby Yoda Hat by Sunshine Leland

R2D2 Beanie by Carissa Browning

I Have You Now double-knit Scarf by Frivolite Handcrafts

Yub Nub Scoodie by Kristen Stevenson (How fricking cute is this?!)

So what if knitting and crocheting is not really your thing? What if you love the art and simply want to purchase some of these adorable hand-made crafts without having to learn how? Etsy is chock full of shops that offer many nerdy knits and crochets. For example:

And finally, this epic Amigurumi collection by GMomCrochets
