The world s opening back up again. As scary as that sounds, some have really been getting the con itch (not the bad kind!) Going to a convention can be the highlight of the year, and for those of us who love to cosplay it has been way too long! A day full of fun and a great excuse to don your favorite costume. Getting your cosplay right is big business and many cosplayers will have spent months if not years developing their impressive costumes. While you might not have years to give your costume that extra pizazz there is still a lot you can do to make your costume stand out from the cosplay crowd, in even a short amount of time.
Attention to the All-Over Detail
One of the quickest and most effective ways to level up your cosplay is to pay attention to the fine details and this doesn’t just include the clothes you are wearing. Firstly, you want to make sure you have had time to iron your costume before you wear it, together with removing any pet fur or hair with a lint roller. Your hair (or wig) needs to be in perfect place, neatly styled, and with any wispy bits sprayed into submission. Finally, ensure all buttons are in place, that there are no holes, or loose stitching, which could form a hole (I personally always carry a cosplay emergency repair kit).
Work on Your Mindset
It is not just how you look that will make you stand out but how you feel and how you act. Take inspiration from the great Shen Yun performers who dedicate hours to perfecting their craft and channeling their inner character. You can do the same. Spend time in your cosplay to get a feel for the cosplayer you become when you wear it. Practice smiling, your facial expressions, your posture, and posing all in your cosplay ready for the photos that will be taken and to help you feel as comfortable as possible in your cosplay. Oh and make sure you have done your homework and know your character inside out.
Practice Your Hair and Make-up
The last thing you want is to be stressed and rushed on the day. To avoid this, spend time planning ahead. Plan how you want your hair and make-up and then take the time to practice your styles and looks. This is the same even if you are wearing a wig. Your wig needs to be styled as well. When it comes to your wig, be sure to invest in a high quality piece and not just the cheapest wig you can find. These wigs are generally of poorer quality and will become hot, itchy, and annoying when you wear them all day.
A top tip for when you put on your make-up is to use a primer and finishing powder or setting spray. These conventions can be a long affair and your make up will not last the day if you have not given it a little helping hand. The last thing you want is a photo of you showing smudged and fading make up. A primer will help the make-up sit on your skin and the finishing powder will help to keep it there.
