Her Universe Fashion Show SDCC 2017

This year during San Diego Comic Con, we were lucky enough to cover the Her Universe Fashion Show (as official press)! Thoughtful Inspiration was the theme, the year of making dreams come true. “If you can dream it, you can do it.” were the words Ashley Eckstein used. Check out the finalists, the winners, the judges, Ashley’s beautiful gown, and upcoming Her Universe news!

One of the biggest reveals at the Her Universe Fashion Show every year is founder Ashley Eckstein’s gown. This year’s gown was inspired by Cinderella and dreams come true.

The Disney inspired dress Ashley wears is by Andrew McClaine. He made the dress in 3 days, using 55 yards of fabric, and 5000 hand beaded crystals.

As the votes were tabulated, the audience got to watch a sneak peek at Raven Simone’s upcoming show on The Disney Channel, Raven’s Home.

Roni’s Take

It is ridiculous to try to choose a favorite from the Her Universe show! There was so much creativity, beauty, and dreams on that runway. Besides Ashley’s stunning fairy godmother/Cinderella inspired dress, I’d have to say Lindsey’s Princess Mononoke inspired daywear was gorgeous. I would rock those pants on the daily.

Jaime’s Take

I was so inspired by the creativity and thought that was placed into every one of these looks. It is so hard to choose a favorite but I would definitely wear the Sorceress Supreme, as well as Style Never Dies. I loved how inclusive the Her Universe Fashion Show was in its variety of models in varying body types, as well as allowing designers to model their own creations.

Rachel’s Take

First of all, we had some of the best seats in the house to view these amazing works of art. And that’s exactly what these outfits were. Something that I really loved had were the little vignettes where we got a chance to get to know the designers behind the creations. It was definitely a treat to get a sneak peek into their creative process and how their designs went from mannequin to runway. Highlights for me was a beautiful dress inspired by Groot. It was inventive and the addition of lights just gave the dress that extra bit of sparkle. And speaking of sparkle, a big shout-out to Ashley, the real life Gisele. Her Disney spirit and joy is utterly infectious and you could tell that by the smiles on all the faces in the room that night. I hope we’ll be able to cover this event for years to come.

Jenine’s Take

Wow. Just wow. Ashley is inspiring. Dream big, then dream bigger because “if you can dream it, you can do it” was the take home message. I love that statement. I also liked the intro videos of each contestants inspiration and a small glimpse of their process for their designs. It made it easier to connect to the couture design, as well as appreciate all the hard work that they have put into their creations as well. All the creations were well done and well thought out. My favourites were: Justice Rains From Above romper, Style Never Dies dress, The Diva from Fifth Element dress, and the I Am Groot dress. But my favourite part of the show was when members of the audience whom were cosplaying got to walk the runway while the judges went away to vote. The cuteness factor just shot up that much more. Overall, it was a fantastic event!

The Winners!

Winners Her Universe Fashion

Judges’ Choice was a tie Lindsay Meesak Orndorff Princess Mononoke, Rose Ivy’s Sorceress Supreme, and Audience Choice Grace Johnston’s Don’t Panic (Hitchhiker’s Guide)

Congratulations to all of the winners, as well as all of the designers who participated. There was a 26th entry called Room 237 inspired by The Shining, designed by Amanda Avery. We still got to see her process video but unfortunately Amanda had to drop out of the Fashion Show.

Ashley announced that the 2018 collection is going to consist of head-to-toe looks inspired by Disney Princesses: Power Princess! Before the competition we also got to see the full Wonder Woman collection which is currently in stores (the Wonder woman collection is out of control!). We also got to see the 50’s inspired Star Wars wear, the Marvel themed active wear, Disney original Lizzie Mcguire and That’s So Raven shirts, and some of the upcoming Princess Mononoke collection. The Professional collection is now available on ThinkGeek.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Her Universe Fashion Show and want to thank Ashley Eckstein and the Her Universe team for allowing us to cover this spectacular event. We hope to cover the Her Universe Fashion Show in upcoming years.
