Hello Love Nerds! Valentine’s Day is almost upon us so I thought I would celebrate by sharing with you some of my all-time favorite couples in video games. SPOILERS are present, but many of these games have been out for a very long time. However, if you are not keen on spoilers for any of the games that lie ahead consider yourself warned. That being said, here are my Top 14 Video Game Couples!
Link and Zelda – The Legend of Zelda Series
In earlier video games, I will admit, the chemistry doesn’t seem to be there really. But just watch this scene from Twilight Princess in which they share their first kiss and I am a believer. I spent many days of my childhood playing as Link trying to rescue this Princess, so it’s only fitting that he finally gets some lip action!
Squall and Rinoa – Final Fantasy VIII
Ask any Final Fantasy fan who their favorite FF couple is and the majority of them will probably choose this couple. And with good reason! Just look at them!
Master Chief and Cortana – Halo Series
Who says a guy can’t be in a relationship with AI? I mean come on….
Mario and Peach – Super Mario Bros Series
This is perhaps the oldest video game couple of all time. It’s just too bad that the princess is always in another castle…
Tidus and Yuna – Final Fantasy X
There is usually some sort of love story in a Final Fantasy game. We will ignore that awful laughing scene that someone decided was a good idea in FFX and instead focus on the beauty in this scene.
Sora and Kiari – Kingdom Hearts
They’re just kids but they’re still such a cute couple with a great love story
The Joker and Harley Quinn – Batman: Arkham Knight
It just didn’t feel right to make a couples article without including these two. Despite the Joker’s tendency to manipulate and sometimes mistreat Harley, she will always be there for her Puddin’.
Juliet and Nick – Lollipop Chainsaw (Warning: Adult content, NSFW)
Sometimes love is about knowing when it’s the right time to decapitate your boyfriend. No matter what, always stand by your man….even if he is just a head.
Pan-Man and Ms. Pac-Man
This couple has been around almost as long as Mario and Peach! *Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka……..*
Claire and Steve – Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Darkside Chronicles
Okay I’ll admit Steve was kind of annoying at times during Code Veronica (they chose a much better voice actor IMO for Darkside Chronicles) but there was no denying the chemistry and feelings between him and Claire. Just watch this scene in which Steve has been mutated by the T-Virus and sacrifces himself to save Claire…just sad.
Ethan and Madison – Heavy Rain
Ethan has experienced a lot of loss. While trying to rescue his son from the origami killer he finds Madison. The love and attraction that develops between them is undeniable (if you’ve played the game you know THE SCENE). And because this game is so interactive, you get to feel like you’re a part of the action…if you catch my drift *nudge nudge*
James and Mary Sunderland Silent Hill 2
This pairing is sweet yet sad, and then we discover the very tragic truth about her death. James still doesn’t seem to be able to cope with the loss of his wife and is so convinced that she’s still alive, trapped in Silent Hill that he will go to any length to have her back. No matter what this couple does not get a happy ending but it doesn’t mean that we don’t get to enjoy their story along the way.
Sonic and Amy Rose – Sonic Boom
As much as I love the pairing of Sonic and Sally in the old cartoon, I must admit I like this pairing even better. Amy and Sonic butt heads and banter a lot and both have a very competitive nature. This makes for a fantastic duo filled with just the right amount of tension.
Cloud & Aerith/Cloud & Tifa – Final Fantasy VII
This one was really hard for me….like, really hard. There is an obvious romantic connection between Cloud and both of these ladies. Obviously he doesn’t end up with Aerith because of her tragic death. Had she lived would he still have ended up with Tifa? They do have a lot of history together, and dispite the fact that Tifa knows that Cloud will always love Aerith, rather than being completely jealous and threatened she is supportive and caring.
(This video contains scenes from the original FFVII, the PC Remake, and Kingdom Hearts)
Are you feeling sappy now? I know I am! So, listen…even if you don’t have a special someone to spend Valentine’s Day with just grab a controller and live out your ideal romance through some of these beloved video game couples. I won’t judge, I promise!
Stay Nerdy, my friends!
