When we first started planning the nerd blog, I knew I wanted to write something about Wil Wheaton. Yes, he is one of the most recognizable nerds, many know him from Star Trek, Big Bang or Table Top, but above everything he is a wonderful human and is one of the nerdom’s biggest spokespersons. He is a shining example of unapologetically, being who you are and accepting who you are. Sure, it takes a lot of work to reach that point, but he shows us it’s worth it.
There is no shame in loving things in such a way that others may not understand. Yes, we are a little odd, but nerds make things interesting. Depending on our interests, some may think our dedication to our “nerdy” things is us trying to escape reality. That may very well be sometimes, because look around, why wouldn’t you want to escape? But…many times…this dedication to “nerdy” things helps us understand the world better, helps us find solutions and helps us be better.
We are now living in a time where nerd culture is mainstream! It’s amazing to see how many people are owning up to their inner nerd. I have to be honest, sometimes my inner nerd doesn’t want to share the nerdom with all the new folks, fearing we are being infiltrated by trend sheep. It’s important to take a step back and remember that’s not what being a nerd is about. We do not exclude, we welcome; we do not bully, we accept. Why? Because we know what that’s like. So, as Wil often says, #DontBeADick!
Thank you Wil for being awesome and continuing to spread the nerd word.
I leave you with the following videos which showcase what makes Mr. Wheaton so special!
One of my favorite speeches, it never gets old. With Comic Con upon us, to all those who aren’t nerds, please watch this video to get a better understanding of the nerds in your life and love them for it!
