A Nerd’s Menagerie: Beauty & Film

February is upon us and it seems Valentine’s Day always seems to define the entire month; a romantic month, made for love and beauty or stress and consumerism… Depending of course on your personal views. Well, I’m here to tell you, as a nerd, there are many things to focus on. Spend February loving the things you enjoy and enjoying the things you love! (On the TV and theater front…Deadpool and Walking Dead are on the way to make us happy this month.)

I mentioned earlier today that this week we were dedicating a few posts to Hiddles in honor of his 35th birthday! As we are all… errr… most of us some of us are aware, Tom is a lover of poetry and sees the beauty in many things.

This is a good way to start February. Tom can be our Cupid… So, in honor of this idea, let’s focus on the beauty of film today.

CineFix released their Top 10 list of the “Most Beautiful Movies of All Time”

It’s a fantastic and inspiring list, which mentions many of my personal favorites like Amelie, What Dreams May Come or Big Fish, but I wanted to showcase 6 other favorite nerdy film beauties.

1927 Fitz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s Metropolis; one of the first feature length sci-fi films! A true art piece and inspiration for designers.

Who can forget seeing real life dinosaurs for the first time?! The catalyst to many a Peter Pan syndromes! It was iconic and beautiful for every 90’s kid! Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park.

There are many beautiful space movies, as mentioned in CineFix’s list, but let’s fawn over the color design in Besson’s 1997, The Fifth Element. In fact, Guardians of the Galaxy has very similar color design. Gotta love a colorful universe!

Being overwhelmed by the beauty and majestic scope of New Zealand as Middle Earth in Peter Jackson’s Lord of The Rings series is another unforgettable piece of film history.

Nolan’s 2010 Inception… I don’t believe anyone will be forgetting the dreamlike, Escher-esque landscapes any time soon, as seen here.

Jarmusch’s 2014 Only Lovers Left Alive is not your typical vampire movie; it’s quiet and introspective. It’s an ode to art in it’s many forms. Also… Tilda and Tom are just epic together.

There are many beautiful films, beautiful scenes for visual or emotional reasons. What are some of your favorites?

  1. Coming from a man and part nerd, I haven’t heard of some of these. Nor do I expect to see beautiful movies such as Young Guns or Karate Kid. I do however expect to see Back to Future 1,2 & 3. Transformers, Matrix(s), Avatar for some. The list grows. I still love you though.

    • LMAO! Yes, those are good picks…for different reasons. I would recommend checking out some of the above just to broaden your genres. I almost did include Matrix and Avatar for visually beautiful.
