A Nerd’s Menagerie: Is Reinvention Necessary in the New Year?

A new year, a new you. It seems to be everywhere. My personal Facebook feed is full of ads and articles about kickstarting health and fitness routines, new beauty products to try, new haircuts per your zodiac, new short-cut cleaning techniques and more things to “start your year off right!”

WFFZHByGotta focus on the simple things.

Everyone treats a new year like a clean slate, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Sometimes it’s easier to put ourselves on a timeline. I think spending most of our adolescence in a school environment, surrounded by nothing but timelines, makes these constructs comfortable. Thing is, a lot of the goals/resolutions people make at the beginning of the year are not easily measured by said timeline. Wanting to get healthy or fit is a lifestyle change with no end. You don’t just stop working out and eating healthy when you reach your goal, or you’ll end up right where you started, right?

giphyGotta not lose sight of what’s important.

My new year was in the middle of 2015, when I started this “Curious” journey. Though I welcome 2016 with open arms, it doesn’t really feel like the beginning of something. It feels like the bright continuation of a journey already begun. As I mentioned previously, we are aiming to grow, write and do things that we enjoy with the hopes you will enjoy them, too. It’s crazy, hard work; it can be overwhelming and sometimes leaves me questioning my resolve. I’ve luckily surrounded myself with people who make it worth it, and even among the nega-bug that bites every once in awhile, I’m not too worried. I feel like everything will work out as it should. I know I’ll have to be reminded of that. lol.

GalGadot-WonderWomanGotta stay optimistic.

Personally, I feel I’ve neglected quite a few things in 2015 and have already taken steps to change that. Just to mention a few things in hope you guys help me stay accountable…

  1. My family is pretty terrible about getting together but once a year, so I’m trying to organize a monthly meal. Baby steps…lol.
  2. I want to learn at least one new thing this year. Not sure what yet, but I have a few things in mind.
  3. Need to recommit to my health. I’m haven’t totally lost my health routine, but I’ve been lackadaisical with it. I owe it not only to myself, but my loved ones, as well.
  4. I need to continue to work on not being afraid of being sappy and vulnerable when the opportunity presents itself. I need to be a little bit more trusting and open to the possibility that I’ll be someone’s first choice.

Most of these things are continuous, and will require mindful effort and behavior.
doctor-strange-1024x439Gotta stay make it happen.

If you feel a reinvention is necessary, then do it. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing something that will make you happier. But don’t let others decide what that reinvention should be, don’t do it because everyone else is. You might be perfectly happy where you are. If there’s any residue from 2015 that may make your 2016 difficult, it might be time to look at it and say fuck take off.

giphy-1Gotta keep on moving.

If you get blind-sided by something and you’re not sure how it’s going to turn out…give it a chance and wait before you close yourself to an enjoyable experience. You may be pleasantly surprised…(one can only hope.)
giphy-2Gotta try before you judge.

On the NC front, it’s looking like a nomadic year full of cons and nerd gatherings! Our first is coming up this Friday with Wizard World Nola! Where we will be joining Nerdy Gras and Nerd Fu on a lovely nerdy joint venture! It’s going to be quite epic, and I’m so looking forward to it! We’re hoping our non-podcast podcast will adult and just be a podcast. lol! A theme song would be nice…

So, we’re heading into a busy, extremely nerdy year full of hope and fun! I wish the best for all you nerd loves! If you couldn’t tell from the gifs and pics, we’re headed to a year at the movie theater. It’s a great time to be a nerd guys, enjoy it!
