A Nerd’s Menagerie

It’s been 8 days since SDCC and Nerd HQ, and the transition back to reality has been a slow and reluctant process. All of us who were lucky to attend or watch via live stream have come to the conclusion that adulting is difficult and horribly unwelcome after a fantastic week of nerdiness. If you are reading this, chances are you are a nerd yourself and have hopefully been lucky enough to attend a con at some point. Well, if you haven’t been to San Diego, then know, that it is nerd mecca. The energy is like nothing you’ll experience, but it’s a comfortable feeling, like coming home. Some of you may not understand this or may think I’m over dramatizing, but I mean it with all sincerity. I personally, only went to San Diego to attend Nerd HQ, and I did so to specifically spend time with a collection of some of the most fantastic people I’ve been fortunate to call friends. Nerd HQ changed venues this year, but it kept the same heart. Those who embrace the purpose of HQ, the charitable benefits for Operation Smile, and the opportunity to spend time friends, can openly say, they were the best 4 days of summer. Nerd HQ offers intimate panels and celebrity photo ops called Smiles for Smiles, which were fantastic this year as they always are. But what makes it different from other events, you may ask? It’s difficult to explain, Nerd HQ offers a positive, welcoming atmosphere and provides a haven for like-minded souls to be together. That is what makes San Diego Con week so addicting, and it’s what makes nerds begin planning for the following July before this Con is even over. Imagine a place where you can feel completely yourself, a place where there is no judgment, no harassment. It’s a retreat, it’s a place for you to recognize your value and embrace your brand of “weird.” Perhaps it has such an impact that you can carry the confidence back home with you. You have to experience it for yourself, and I can only hope you’d agree. <3

Let’s start the week showcasing some wonderful creative nerds.
