Nerdie Foodie: Dreams Do Come True (Part 1)

Hello Nerdie Foodies! I’ve had a realization that maybe the reason why I have an affinity for Disney and Disney Pixar movies is because there is almost always some dreamy, yummy food dish in a scene. Food and Disney/Pixar? Yes please! Bring it on!

Just a quick announcement, and do I have news for you! We are moving from our daily spot on Friday afternoons to Thursday afternoons! (Update – Nerdie Foodie is back on Fridays every 2 weeks!)

Okay. Now back to the program. Over the next few weeks we are checking out some dishes and recipes that are from Disney and Pixar movies that you can make yourself! What are you waiting for? Come and join me!

Mulan: Breakfast Rice Porridge

Mushu, ever the cheerleader for Mulan to succeed in life, wakes her up from bootcamp with a bowl of breakfast porridge (aka. Congee or Jook or Xi Fan). Having congee for breakfast is nothing out of the ordinary for Chinese people. In fact, it can be consumed at any time of day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, dim sum, and even when you’re sick. You can have any toppings you want in it. In this case, it’s two sunny side up eggs and a strip of bacon as seen in this scene. Yum!

Made With Lau shares with us their father’s recipe on how to make congee below. Everyone has their own way of making congee but if you want to make something similar to what you can get at a dim sum, check out this video! Mr. Lau shares with us some of the secret tips and tricks to making Chinese restaurant style congee. But it’s also one of those recipes that you just learn about by watching your mom and your grandma cook it, and is handed down from generation to generation.

Inside Out: San Francisco’s Broccoli Pizza

Clearly, Riley is not a fan of broccoli. However, she just moved to San Fran and most likely hasn’t developed the hipster foodie palate yet. But then again, some people just don’t like broccoli.

But in case you wanted to try your hand at the San Fran broccoli pizza, Amanda (from The Skinny Fork) shares with us her recipe here! Don’t worry – there is cheese on this pizza!

Tangled: Hazelnut Soup

In case you haven’t noticed, we love Tangled! And it just so happens Rapunzel loves hazelnut soup. Feast of Fiction shows us how to make our own below! There’s not that much more to say than, enjoy!

Tangled: Chocolate Chip Cookies

And who can forget all those plates of chocolate chip cookies Rapunzel balances while singing?

The Princess and The Frog: Beignets

Three words: Princess Tiana’s Beignets. Or as we call them here at NC – BEIGN-YAYS!! Who does not love the taste of fried dough? And what do we associate beign-yays with? NOLA, which leads to Café Du Monde and our dear friend and fellow nerd, Chelle from Nerdy Gras. I have personally not gone down to NOLA to try the authentic beignets from Café du Monde, so I to turn to Chelle for her opinions about these beign-yay recipes! (Update – This has been rectified and we dream about beignets all the time!)

Homemade

First up, for the home bakers. Southern Living has a recipe for beignets. I figured since we’re talking about southern baking, this recipe has to be legit, right? Plus, Chelle said she has had good results from other Southern Living recipes before. So here you go Nerdie Foodies, check out the recipe below and if you attempt this recipe, let us know in the comments below how they turned out for you and post photos on our social medias!

Simple, Easy, Dreamy

If you are wanting to go with a recipe that is as close as you can get without having to travel to Café Du Monde, our Nerdy Gras suggests to go with the Café Du Monde beignet mix! She only makes beignets with the premade mix and says that while it may not taste exactly like the beignets you get at Café Du Monde, but it’s pretty close. You can find the link to buy the premix on their website here! And bonus! Café Du Monde also has a list of tips on how you can have success in making and baking beignets at home here!

Gluten-Free

And of course, I can’t forget about my gluten-free friends. So courtesy of the Disney chefs at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory in the Port Orleans Resort in the French Quarter at Walt Disneyworld, they have released their recipe for the official Disneyworld gluten-free beignets! Check out the recipe here!

Just don’t forget to drizzle some honey onto your beignets before you top it off with a ton of powdered sugar!

Happy creating! A special shoutout to our Nerdy Gras, Chelle, for her input! If you try any of these recipes or recipes from previous Nerdie Foodie posts, send us a photo on our social medias because we’d love to see your creations!
